Love The Summer Skin You’re In!

The first day of summer is right around the corner, and that means extra care for your skin. And rule #1 is – it’s never too late to start! A little extra effort now in developing a summer skin routine while you’re young will help you keep that smooth and supple skin! So how do you do it? Read on to learn all the things you can do to protect your fabulous skin.

  1. Sunscreen

Sunscreen is your best friend. Period. Lather it on everywhere, and repeat every few hours if you’re out in the sun most of the day. If you’re swimming, remember that chlorine and salt water can wash away sunscreen, so it’s important to refresh every few hours – or every hour if you are just hanging out in the water.

I use a moisturizer and a foundation with sunscreen, but if I plan to tan poolside or at the beach, I double up on the sunscreen. There are many different kinds of sunscreen today – so how do you know the best ones to use? At Fantasia, we LOVE the SkinCeuticals line. It has a Mineral, Tinted, Sheer, and Sport Sunscreen, available in 30SPF and 60SPF. There’s also specialized sunscreens for oily skin, dry, and combination.

  1. Embrace the shade!

Even with sunscreen, it’s important to avoid too much sun on your face, even with sunscreen. Wear a hat that covers the face when tanning at the beach, and instead of a tanning salon, use a sunless tanner. A tan may look good now, but you can obtain that same healthy glow with some of the many products out there today (like Sunless Tanner by St. Tropez), without risking the health of your skin later.

  1. Invest in a good eye cream

No matter what the weather, use an eye cream with SPF every day, year-round. The skin around your eyes is so thin, even a few minutes of sun or pollutant exposure can add up to wrinkles over time. Check out Skinceuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex – this fabulous product will help reduce current and future wrinkles and crow’s feet.

  1. Take it all off! And by that I mean your make – up of course

While it may be tempting to just fall into bed after a long summer day, don’t go to bed with your makeup on. Cosmetics can trap skin-damaging free radicals that are in the air (car exhaust, smoke, pollutants) so take off the makeup and cleanse your skin with a good quality facewash (may we recommend Skinceuticals Purifying Cleanser) before sleepy time.

  1. Exfoliate!

When you have time, exfoliate your skin at least once a week or more often if you are prone to breakouts. Summer sweat can do a number on your skin, so get rid of that layer of old skin cells that can dull your complexion. Use Skinceuticals Clarifying Clay Masque 2-3 times a week to decongest clogged pores and life impurities from the skin’s surface.

And if you think we’ve spent way too much attention on sun skincare, get this: People who wore sunscreen every day for four years didn’t appear to age at all in one Australian study. And even grabbing coffee or lunch, which could mean being outside for only five minutes without sunscreen, can break down enough collagen in the skin to cause wrinkles in a few years.

So keep that youthful glow and love the summer skin you’re in – you’ll thank yourself later!
