The minute I tell people that I wear a hair “system” (truthfully, I usually say I wear extensions), they start asking questions: Is it real hair? How do you take care of it? It looks so natural – how does it stay on? I’ve even had people ask if they can touch my hair, as I point out where my system begins. I’m always happy to share my experience with them, but let’s face it – I don’t have all the answers.
That’s why I recently sat down with Fantasia Salon & Hair Restoration Center Founder and Owner, Twila Donley, to ask some of the more detailed questions from readers like you – Twila is a Hair Loss Expert, with 50 years of experience to her credit.
Q: Twila, what are some of the more common reasons for hair thinning – and what can be done about it?
A: Besides a medical reason – like an auto-immune disease or alopecia – the main reason why hair thins is that our hair follicles are plugged – inhibiting new growth. That means you really need a deep clean, starting in your teens into your 20’s. You may be washing and styling your own hair, and only visit your stylist every 6 weeks for a haircut, but Fantasia Hair Stylists are trained to always give your hair a deep, deep clean, the kind you just can’t give yourself. I also tell men and women to watch their diet, and don’t smoke – and you may slow down the thinning or even postpone it for several years.
Q: You said in your teens into your 20’s – isn’t that a little young?
A: Not at all – you see, once you pass puberty, your hormones are still in a state of flux, as they possibly prepare for childbirth. Hormones can wreak havoc on every part of your body – including your hair. At Fantasia, we’ve had customers as young as 8 years old, and as mature as 80. Today, everyone is overly stressed, including children. They have to deal with schoolwork, often too much homework, bullies, and possibly a difficult home life. Not to mention, the need to keep up with the latest technology. Stress can definitely cause hair loss – we had a client here at Fantasia Salon & Hair Restoration Center whose husband was killed in a plane crash. That’s a life-altering event that can show up anywhere in your body, especially your hair.
Q: Okay, so start in your 20’s and make sure you see your stylist for a deep clean every 4 to 6 weeks – then what?
A: Invest in yourself – that means, don’t buy the on-sale shampoo and conditioner – buy what your hairstylist recommends, and ask how often you should wash your hair. Nowadays we’re seeing more clients shampoo their hair 3-4 times a week, instead of every day, and that’s good because styling with a hair dryer, curling iron, and hot curlers can also lead to hair damage and loss.
You know, the truth of the matter is that one in 4 women will suffer from some type of hair loss in their lifetime. It may be temporary or it may be permanent – the key is to catch it early, and then ask a Hair Restoration Specialist to recommend a treatment for you.
Q: What are some of the latest advances in hair restoration? I heard a customer talk about laser therapy and how it’s made such a difference in her life.
A: That’s true. Laser Hair Therapy is one of the latest, and most popular, hair solutions offered at Fantasia Salon & Hair Restoration Center. What we like about Fantasia’s Laser Therapy is that it’s non-invasive, safe, and healthy, plus it’s clinically proven to be effective.
We offer two kinds of Laser Hair Therapy – with one, we use a stronger dosage where people come in twice a week for 6 months. The other uses a lower dose of Laser Therapy, but can be done at home – this makes a client’s life simple, and they can still slow down the progression of the hair loss, actually thicken the hair in diameter, and promote healthy hair growth.
Q: Tell me about some of the other treatment options Fantasia offers.
A: Fantasia offers the most non-surgical hair restoration options in the state – and beyond! We have customers who drive in from North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, Iowa – all to take advantage of our wide variety of restoration solutions.
We offer Professional Scalp Treatments, Fill-ins and Extensions, and our line of Volumizing Strands and Micro-Point Links are becoming more and more popular. With this process, a Fantasia Hair Restoration Specialist receives special, certified training, to attach multiple hairs onto one single strand of growing hair. The knot is so micro-tiny, the added hair looks, feels and behaves just like the existing growing hair – if not better. With Micro-Point Link, you can have 600 – 1200 additional strands of hair (or more) added to your own growing hair…in just one hour. You can have thousands of additional strands of hair added quickly, easily restoring your confidence and your hair. Fantasia is of only a few salons in the state to offer this specialized solution.
Then of course, we have Hair Restoration Systems, from top of the head to full cap, and a wide selection of wigs, hats, turbans and more. We work closely with our vendors to offer customized solutions to fit specific needs.
Q: Walk me through some of the hair systems Fantasia offers.
A: For those whose hair loss is either temporary or gradual, another solution is top-of-the-head pieces and clips that can be bonded or secured with clips. For those whose hair loss may be permanent or more advanced, we recommend a full cap wig. Our Hair Restoration Specialists will assist with choosing the proper length and color to achieve the look you desire.
Q: So, to summarize – tell me at what ages – and what stages – a woman should be on the lookout for thinning hair or hair loss.
A: We are seeing hair loss much earlier in teens and 20 year olds. Poor diets, stress and drugs are the main culprits. 30’s and 40’s hair loss can be due to pregnancy, medications and even depression. If your 50’s and beyond, menopause will again cause hormones to impact your hair.
Our foods, drugs and environment are enormous contributors to hair loss at any age. Always consult your professional hair stylist for a proper hair care regimen to rid the scalp and hair of product buildup and debris.
